September Free Pattern: Crochet Hook Holder Keychain

September brings cooler mornings, slower afternoons, and the perfect excuse to tuck a small crochet project into your bag.

This month’s free pattern is a Crochet Hook Holder Keychain.

It is a simple little case designed to hold one crochet hook and attach to your tote bag or project bag with a ball chain. No more searching through the bottom of your bag when you want to crochet on the go. Your hook stays easy to find, right where you need it.

The pattern is beginner-friendly and takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours to complete. The size is also easy to customize, so you can make it to fit your favorite crochet hook.

For this project, we used Hamanaka Bonny, a durable and colorful acrylic yarn made in Japan, and finished the holder with our little Puffy Flower Motif from the March Free Pattern.

The construction is very simple. First, you crochet a narrow strip in single crochet. The lower section is folded and joined to create the hook pocket, while the upper section becomes a small loop for the ball chain.

A puffy flower adds a playful finishing touch.

Finished Size

This pattern is designed to be adjusted to fit the crochet hook you would like to carry.

Both the width and length can be customized, depending on the size and shape of your crochet hook.

For our sample, we began with 3 foundation chains and worked approximately 70 rows.

Before You Begin

Before starting, choose the crochet hook you would like to keep inside your holder.

The 3-chain foundation used in this pattern is only a guideline. Crochet hooks can vary quite a bit in thickness, especially around the handle.

For our sample, we chained 3, but you can add or remove foundation chains to suit your hook.

Hold the foundation chain against the widest part of your crochet hook. It should be wide enough to wrap comfortably around the hook once the piece is folded, without being too loose.

The number of rows can also be adjusted. We worked approximately 70 rows, but you may need more or fewer depending on the length of your hook.

Checking the fit as you crochet is the easiest way to get the right size.

Instructions

Main Strip

For our sample:

Chain 3.

Remember, you can increase or decrease the number of chains depending on the width of your crochet hook.

Chain 1 for turning.

Work 1 single crochet into each foundation chain.

You should have 3 single crochets if you began with Chain 3.

Chain 1 and turn.

Work 1 single crochet into each stitch across.

Continue repeating:

Chain 1, turn, and single crochet across.

Work approximately 70 rows, or continue until the strip is long enough for your crochet hook.

As you work, place your crochet hook against the strip occasionally to check the size.

Creating the Hook Pocket

Place your crochet hook on the finished strip.

Fold the lower section upward to create a pocket around the hook.

The hook should sit comfortably inside the pocket. It should be snug enough that it does not easily fall out, but loose enough to slide in and out without difficulty.

Once you are happy with the size, use slip stitches to join the two layers together along one side.

Fasten off.

Repeat along the opposite side.

You now have the main pocket for your crochet hook.

Puffy Flower Motif

For the flower decoration, we used the same 5-Petal Puffy Flower Motif featured in our March Free Pattern.

Choose any color you like. A contrasting color makes the flower stand out beautifully against the holder.

Abbreviations

MR = Magic Ring
ch = chain
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
sl st = slip stitch

US crochet terms are used throughout this pattern.

Center

Make a Magic Ring (MR).

Work 5 sc into the ring.

Pull the tail to close the ring.

Sl st into the first sc to join.

Petals

Make one petal in each of the 5 single crochet stitches.

For each petal:

Ch 3.

In the same stitch at the base of the chain, work 5 unfinished dc:

Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop.

Yarn over and pull through 2 loops, then stop, leaving the remaining loops on your hook.

Repeat until you have worked 5 unfinished double crochets into the same stitch.

Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook to close the cluster.

Ch 3, then sl st into the same stitch.

One petal is complete.

Repeat in each remaining stitch until you have 5 petals.

Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.

Creating the Ball Chain Loop & Adding the flower

At the top of the holder, fold the remaining section toward the back.

This folded section will become the small channel for your ball chain.

Using a tapestry needle and yarn, sew the folded edge securely in place.

Position the Puffy Flower Motif on the front of the holder.

As you secure the folded section at the back, you can also stitch the flower onto the front.

Sew the flower firmly in place while keeping the ball-chain channel open.

Weave in any remaining yarn ends.

Be careful to keep the center of the fold open so the ball chain can slide through.

Finishing

Thread the ball chain through the loop at the top of the holder.

Close the ball chain and place your crochet hook inside.

Your Crochet Hook Holder Keychain is complete. 🧶🔑

Attach it to a tote bag, project bag, backpack, or wherever you like to keep your crochet supplies close at hand.

Tips

If your crochet hook has a thicker ergonomic handle, begin with a few extra foundation chains.

If you use a slim metal crochet hook, you may need fewer chains.

The approximately 70 rows used in our sample are also just a guideline. Hold your crochet hook against the piece as you work and adjust the length as needed.

For an extra snug holder, make the pocket slightly shorter than the full length of the hook so the top remains easy to grab.

Try different color combinations for the holder and flower, or use small amounts of leftover yarn to make several versions for different project bags.
