3. Helpful Tips for Making Your Cotton Scrunchie

This project is worked in Annie, a smooth cotton yarn that creates neat stitches and a soft, clean finish.

The yarn is easy to handle and comfortable to crochet with, making this a gentle and satisfying project. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the process.

Cover the hair elastic fully in Round 1.

In the first round, the most important thing is to cover the hair elastic evenly with single crochet stitches. The exact stitch count does not need to be perfect, as it may vary depending on the size of your elastic, yarn, and tension.

Keep your tension even.

Try to keep your stitches smooth and consistent throughout the project. If your stitches are too tight, the scrunchie may feel stiff and less ruffly. If they are too loose, the shape may feel softer and less defined.

Let the ruffles grow naturally.

As you increase your stitches in Rounds 2 and 3, the scrunchie will begin to gather and form soft ruffles. Do not worry if it looks a little wavy while you are working. That fullness is part of the design.

Do not worry too much about exact stitch counts.

Because hair elastics, yarn thickness, and crochet tension can vary, your stitch count may be slightly different from someone else’s. The most important thing is to keep working evenly around and let the shape develop naturally.

Take your time with the beginning chain.

In Rounds 2 and 3, the beginning chain 3 counts as your first double crochet. Be sure to remember this when you continue around the scrunchie and when you join at the end of the round.

It is okay if Round 3 ends a little differently.

When working the repeat in Round 3, your round may end with either 1 dc or 2 dc. This small difference is completely fine, and your scrunchie will still look beautiful.

Add one more round for extra volume if you like.

If you would like a fuller and more dramatic scrunchie, you can repeat Round 3 one more time before adding the border color. (You will need extra yarn)

Work the border evenly and gently.

When adding the final border round, focus on making the edge look neat and balanced. Try not to work too tightly, as this can pull the ruffles inward.

Weave in your ends carefully.

Use a tapestry needle to weave the yarn tails through nearby stitches on the back. For a secure finish, weave in more than one direction, but avoid pulling too tightly so the shape stays soft.

Small variations are part of handmade work.

Each scrunchie may look slightly different depending on your tension, elastic, and the fullness of the ruffles. That softness and individuality are part of the charm of making by hand.

Additional suggestions:

  • Use good lighting so the stitch placement is easier to see.
  • If you are new to crochet, pause the video whenever needed and work one step at a time.
  • If you want a fuller look, try repeating Round 3 before adding the border.
  • After finishing, gently shape the scrunchie with your hands to balance the ruffles.
