Story of Daruma
DARUMA is the renowned thread and yarn brand of Yokota Co., Ltd., a company founded in 1901 by Yokota Chōzaemon. Disappointed by the poor quality threads available at the time, he set out to make “the world’s best thread” and adopted the belief that “the price is temporary, but the quality is eternal”.
The company’s first product was a silk cotton thread—cotton spun to feel as smooth as silk. Throughout its history the firm has kept a customer‑first philosophy: it considers everything from the customer’s viewpoint and encourages each employee to innovate and deliver products and services that delight.
Today DARUMA produces sewing and knitting threads, industrial threads and other craft materials while continuing to publish pattern books and hold workshops. Despite having only around 80 employees, the company prioritises sustainability and high quality over rapid growth; its slogan, “Prices change. Quality endures,” appears on every package along with the distinctive Daruma symbol. Careful product selection and minimalist design keep the brand relevant to modern makers.
