3. Helpful Tips for Making Your Flower Coaster Set

This project is worked in Japanese Wash Cotton, a smooth cotton yarn with beautiful stitch definition and a soft matte finish.

The stitches are clear and comfortable to work with, making this a calm and satisfying project. Here are a few tips to help you enjoy the process.

Keep your tension even.

Try to keep your stitches smooth and consistent throughout the project. If your stitches are too tight, the coaster may curl slightly. If they are too loose, the edges may lose definition.

Tighten each slip stitch join well.

At the end of each round, make sure to pull the yarn snugly after the slip stitch. This helps keep the joins neat and prevents the shape from becoming loose or uneven.

Count your stitches as you go.

Especially in the increase rounds and petal sections, counting your stitches will help you keep the shape even. It is much easier to catch a mistake early than to fix it later.

Slow down during the color changes.

When changing colors, work carefully so the join stays neat. Leaving a short tail and tightening gently afterward will help keep the finish clean.

Front post stitches may feel unfamiliar at first.

In Round 5, the front post double crochet helps define the flower shape. Instead of working into the top loops, you will work around the post of the stitch. If this feels new, pause and follow the video slowly.

Check the shape as you go.

If the coaster starts to pull inward, your border may be too tight. If it starts to wave, you may be adding too many stitches. Gently adjust as needed so the coaster lies flat.

Weave in your ends gently.

Use a tapestry needle to weave the yarn tails through nearby stitches on the back. For a secure finish, weave in more than one direction. Try not to pull too tightly, as this can affect the flower shape.

Small variations are part of handmade work.

Each coaster may look slightly different, especially around the border and petal curves. That softness is part of the charm of making by hand.

Additional suggestions:

- Use good lighting so the stitch placement is easier to see.
- If you are new to crochet, pause the video whenever needed and work one step at a time.
- After finishing, gently shape the coaster with your hands so it lies flat.
- Because the yarn is machine washable, the finished coasters are easy to use in everyday life.
